UK's 'Vaping is Not Tobacco' Campaign Launches
In an effort to get vaping products removed from the Tobacco Products Directive, European-based vaping advocates have launched the Vaping is Not Tobacco campaign.
Businesswire.com reports that the campaign contains two essential pillars:
- The European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) “Let’s demand smarter vaping regulation.” An online petition, the ECI was launched by a citizens committee representing individuals from Germany, France, Italy, Belgium, Ireland, the Czech Republic, the UK and Romania. More supporters are expected to join the committee during the course of the initiative.
- A grassroots tool to make it easier for European citizens to contact their respective candidates running for European elections. It targets both Europe’s estimated 17 million active vapers as well as any other European Union citizens, including non-smokers, who support evidence-based decision-making and helping smokers switch to vaping.
The committee’s stance is that vaping products are modern, battery-powered devices that heat flavored liquid until it vaporizes. The e-liquids, however, do not contain tobacco. The new effort aims “to achieve evidence-based, stand alone European rules for vaping products rather than including them in the EU Tobacco Products Directive on in a pharmaceutical directive.”
Research from the UK’s Royal College of Physicians and PUblic Health England has shown that vaping is 95% less harmful than smoking. Additionally, French-based Economic, Social and Environmental Council (CESE), said “that current rules on vaping products that treat them as if they were tobacco products ‘represents a prudence on the part of the public authorities that is probably excessive” and “slows their use as a tool for smoking cessation.’”
Convincing smokers who want to quit and may want to turn to vaping as a solution may be deterred from the “tobacco” label and misinformation fueled by false media or skewed research. While regulation is key not only in the UK but also in the United States, proper regulation and categorization of our beloved products is essential to save millions of lives. Included in this is a push for flavored liquids, credible information for smokers, product quality and no access to minors, which includes responsible marketing efforts.
Supporters of the campaign, which is officially registered with the European Union, include various companies, associations, advocacy groups and private citizens. If you want to support the Vaping is Not Tobacco campaign, share the petition, reach out to candidates and find out more.
